Lady In Red OPERA

The Westin Hotel

about us

The Lady in Red Opera was founded in 2015 with the goal of providing a platform for and exposing up-and-coming opera artists from the University of Cape Town School of Music. We also intended to introduce opera to black professionals, as the genre is not well-known in the black community. Miss Siphokazi Molteno and Mr Thando Mjandana were the first Opera students to perform. Siphokazi Molteno went on to win the GinetteTheano Prize for the most promising talent at the Glyndebourne Opera Cup finals in 2020.

She later relocated to the US where she is currently employed as a professional Opera artist. Mr Thando Mjandana also relocated to the UK where he is currently employed as a professional Opera tenor artist.
Our attendance used to exceed the 150-person capacity of the venue, so after two years of success, we modified the event type from auditorium to gala dinner, necessitating the shift to the Century City Convention Centre.
Sanlam Life Ltd, Mergence Investment Managers, and Carducci have been our sponsors since the event’s start.

The event also raises mental health awareness among our guests. We want to de-stigmatize the illness so that individuals may openly discuss it and get care. This is not just a problem for the elderly.
